Characteristics
ACSR/AW conductors consist of an aluminum-clad steel core surrounded by one or more layers of aluminum strands. The aluminum cladding on the steel core provides improved corrosion resistance compared to standard galvanized steel cores. The outer aluminum strands ensure good electrical conductivity, while the aluminum cladding slightly enhances overall conductivity compared to traditional ACSR conductors with galvanized steel cores. The steel core retains its high tensile strength, making the conductor suitable for long spans and high-stress applications. Additionally, the aluminum cladding offers superior resistance to corrosion, making ACSR/AW conductors ideal for harsh environments such as coastal or industrial areas. These conductors are available in various stranding configurations to meet specific mechanical and electrical requirements.
Applications
● Overhead Power Transmission: Extensively used in high-voltage power transmission lines, especially in areas prone to corrosion.
● Distribution Lines: Suitable for medium and low-voltage distribution networks, providing reliable performance over long spans.
● Coastal and Industrial Areas: Preferred in environments where standard galvanized steel core conductors might suffer from accelerated corrosion.
● River Crossings and Long Spans: Ideal for crossing rivers and other wide spans due to their high strength and enhanced corrosion resistance.
Standard
ASTM B549
1. Title: Standard Specification for Concentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum Conductors, Aluminum-Clad Steel Reinforced (ACSR/AW)
2. Scope: ASTM B549, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), covers concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round aluminum 1350-H19 (extra hard) aluminum wires and round aluminum-clad steel core wires for use as overhead electrical conductors. The standard details the construction, mechanical properties, and performance criteria required to ensure the conductors meet necessary standards for durability and electrical performance.
BS EN 50182
1. Title: Conductors for Overhead Lines - Round Wire Concentric-Lay-Stranded Conductors
2. Scope: BS EN 50182, published by the British Standards Institution (BSI) and aligned with European norms, specifies the requirements for round wire concentric-lay-stranded conductors used in overhead lines. This standard covers the construction, mechanical properties, and performance criteria to ensure the conductors meet European standards for electrical transmission and distribution.
AS/NZS 3607
1. Title: Conductors - Bare overhead, aluminium and aluminium alloy - Steel reinforced
2. Scope: AS/NZS 3607, published jointly by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand, outlines the specifications for bare overhead conductors used in electrical transmission and distribution networks. The standard specifies construction, mechanical properties, and performance criteria to ensure the conductors meet the requirements for reliable and efficient operation in Australia and New Zealand.
