Drum Handling Procedure

Lower drums gently onto the ground or transport.

Avoid impact force loadings. Never drop drums.

Always protect cable from rubbing or damage. Adjust load or use separators.

Never let drum flanges contact cable on adjacent drums.

Heavy drums should be chained appropriately for transit, with protection from the chain rubbers for the spindle hole in the centre of the drum. Under no circumstances are drums to be transported on their side.

Never lay drums on their side, even on top of pallets, as protruding bolts damage spools and cable.

Always protect product, especially spools, against rope damage during tying down of load.

Never use rope directly over shrinkwrapped cable.

Ensure drums are restrained to restrict movement during sudden stop/starts.

When securing drums for transit, do not place ropes or chains over cable as damage can occur to the outer insulation rendering the cable unserviceable.

Ensure cable sealing is intact so moisture cannot seep into cable. Report damage.

Avoid use of additional nails on drums or cable. Flange thicknesses vary and some customers prohibit their use.

When placing drums on an uneven surface be prepared to check drums against rolling and chock if required.

Do not roll cable drums from the back of a delivery truck to the ground as the resulting flange damage will be unacceptable to the customer as the cable will not be able to be rolled off the drum and the drum will need to be returned.

Cable drums must be placed vertically without any misalignment, and the wooden blocks must be positioned against the edges of the side panels and secured in place.

Do not stack cable drums on top of each other to avoid damaging the cables.

Ensure the interior of the container is clean and free of debris, and have the triangular securing tools ready. With the aid of these tools, workers should slowly roll the cable drum into the container along the designated path. Multiple workers may work together during the rolling process to keep the drum balanced and prevent it from tilting and colliding with the container walls.

Workers first remove any fixtures inside the container and inspect the cable reels to ensure they are secure. Place anti-slip mats or steel plates on the ground outside the container, and then work together to slowly roll the cable reels out of the container along a ramp (if available) or across level ground. Control the speed while rolling to prevent the cable reels from getting out of control due to inertia.

If there is a height difference (>5 cm) or a gap (>10 cm) between the unloading platform and the container floor:

Install a transition bridge: Use steel plates or load-bearing wooden planks with a thickness of ≥10 mm (width > the width of the cable drum) to construct a transition bridge. Secure both ends with bolts or heavy objects to ensure load-bearing safety.

Slope Control: The slope of the auxiliary plate should be ≤15°. Weld anti-slip grooves onto the surface or lay rubber mats to reduce rolling resistance and the risk of slipping.

Select a forklift with a rated load capacity equal to or greater than the weight of the cable drum. Adjust the fork spacing to two-thirds of the drum's width, and slowly insert the forks into the center hole or support bracket, keeping the forks level to prevent tilting. Transport the drums according to the warehouse layout. When stacking, ensure that the drums on upper and lower levels are aligned and that the center of gravity is stable. Heavy-duty cable drums must be stored in a single layer, and warning signs must be posted.
