MV Aerial Bundled Cable

Cables by Type

MV Aerial Bundled Cable

Medium Voltage Aerial Bundled Cable (MV ABC Cable) is an overhead power line designed for distributing electricity at medium voltage levels, typically ranging from 1 kV to 36 kV. It is engineered to provide reliable and safe power distribution, particularly in challenging environments. The cable is manufactured in accordance with SANS Standard, ICEA Standard, AS/NZS Standard, and IEC Standard.

Applications

Utilized for medium voltage power distribution in both urban and rural areas.
Ideal for locations with dense vegetation, narrow streets, or other obstacles where traditional overhead lines or underground cables are impractical.
Commonly used in regions subject to adverse weather conditions such as high winds, snow, or heavy rainfall.

Construction

● Conductor: Made of aluminum, the conductors are insulated with materials such as cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) or ethylene propylene rubber (EPR).
● Insulation: Each conductor is individually insulated to prevent electrical faults and ensure safety.
● Messenger Wire: A supporting messenger wire, usually constructed from galvanized steel or an aluminum alloy, supports the weight of the bundled cables and can also function as a neutral or grounding wire.

Standard

SANS 1713

1. Title: Electric cables - Medium-voltage aerial bundled conductors for voltages from 3,8/6,6 kV to 19/33 kV
2. Scope: SANS 1713, published by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), Specifies the characteristics of medium-voltage aerial bundled conductors (MV ABCs) with stranded aluminium conductors insulated with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), for use at operating voltages in the range 3,8/6,6 kV to 19/33 kV. The cables are intended for use in direct sunlight, where a continuous conductor operating temperature of 90℃ and a short-circuit temperature of 250℃ are not exceeded.

ICEA S-93-639

1. Title: Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC) - Part 1: General Requirements
2. Scope: AS/NZS 3560.1, developed by Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand, outlines the general requirements for aerial bundled cables used in low voltage distribution. This standard includes guidelines for the materials, construction, and testing of the cables to ensure they meet the necessary safety and performance criteria for use in both Australian and New Zealand environments.

AS/NZS 3599.1

1. Title: Aerial Bundled Cables (ABC) - Insulated Cables for Low Voltage Distribution
2. Scope: NF C 33-209, published by the French Association for Standardization (AFNOR), specifies the requirements for insulated aerial bundled cables used in low voltage power distribution. The standard covers various aspects of cable design and construction, including insulation materials, conductor specifications, and performance characteristics to ensure compliance with French and European standards.

IEC 60502-2

1. Title: Power Cables with Extruded Insulation and Their Accessories for Rated Voltages Up to 1 kV (U₀/U) - Part 1: Cables for Electrical Installations
2. Scope: IEC 60502-1, issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), provides specifications for power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories used for rated voltages up to 1 kV. The standard details the construction, materials, and testing requirements for these cables, ensuring they are suitable for use in various electrical installations.

SANS 1713

1. Title: Low Voltage Aerial Bundled Cables
2. Scope: SANS 1418, published by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), specifies the requirements for low voltage aerial bundled cables used in power distribution. The standard outlines the design, construction, and performance criteria for these cables to ensure their reliability and safety in South African electrical distribution networks.
